From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandia.gov\/news\/resources\/releases\/2007\/z-ice.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sandia <\/a>(via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scienceblog.com\/cms\/ice-created-in-nanoseconds-by-sandias-z-machine-12798.html\" target=\"_blank\">Science Blog<\/a>), is this little story about how Sandia Labs used their <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Z_machine\" target=\"_blank\">Z machine<\/a> (click the wikilink to see something out of Frankenstein&#8217;s lab) to turn water into &#8220;hot&#8221; ice at pressures up to 120,000 atmospheres. I knew that water has a number of states, but I really never thought about them until I read this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The three phases of water as we know them \u00e2\u20ac\u201d cold       ice, room temperature liquid, and hot vapor \u00e2\u20ac\u201d are       actually only a small part of water\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s repertory of       states,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d says Sandia researcher Daniel Dolan. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Compressing       water customarily heats it.
